Statement of Belief for St. Mark Union Church

We believe the essence of living an abundant life is a personal relationship with God. We believe this abundant life is available for all who abide; in the spirit, in the word, in the world, and in the hands of God through Christ our Lord and Savior.

We believe that a faithful relationship with Christ brings us hope and power as we search to find identity and meaning in our collective struggle to overcome situations of human desperation such as:

Drug Abuse Unemployment
Despair Ignorance/Illiteracy
Personal Disillusionment Imprisonment
Hopelessness Loss of Personal Identity

We believe that our personal relationship with God through Christ ordains each of us to be a living testimony of the reconciling spirit of God and empowers us to overcome the effects of the demonic forces of our time:

Racism Classism
War Sexism
Environmental Exploitation Violence

We believe that God has rekindled in us the amazing and creative spiritual insight of our enslaved African Ancestors. We vow to continue to redeem Christianity, which has been profaned by the racist institution of slavery. We embrace Christianity and its redemptive power as the gospel of Jesus Christ who is the content of its message and without whom Christian redemption is not possible.

We believe in a God of many faces that makes a place at the table for every person of faith, and we stand in solidarity with people who are dedicated to create the beloved community and a world of friendly people under a friendly sky. Therefore, we go forth into the world in peace, being of good courage, holding fast to that which is good, rendering to no one evil for evil, strengthening the fainthearted, supporting the weak, helping the afflicted, honoring all people, loving and serving the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
